Objective: The aim of this study was to answer which is the best technique to removing glass fiber post and cast metal post considering time, preservation of tooth structure, and costs. Methods: An in vitro, randomized, blinded study was conducted. Sixty endodontically treated teeth were randomized into two groups according to post type. A second randomization was performed for each type of removal technique (ultrasound, drill, or combined; n=10). One-way ANOVA was used to compare the time to post removal, paired t-test compared the amount of tooth structure removed and Kruskal Wallis followed by post hoc Mann-Whitney test were used for cost analysis (P=0.05). Results: There was no difference in post removal time considering post type or technique (P=0.630). The average loss of tooth structure in the cervical region was greater than 30% when only a diamond bur was used to remove fiber glass post (P<0.00001) and cast metal post (P=0.008). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, we can conclude that the selection of the removal technique will depend on the skill of the operator, and some loss of tooth structure will always occur, although greater loss is expected when only diamond burs are used for this purpose.(AU)

RESUMO

Aim: This retrospective study aims to describe and analyze the number of dental implants and implant-retained prostheses performed by the Unified Health System (SUS) in the last decade. Methods: This study is based on secondary data from the official government database (DATASUS) performed from January 2010 to December 2019 and is reported following the STROBE. A descriptive analysis was performed of the total sample and the stratified sample divided by Brazilian states. Results: A total of 143,037 dental implants and 93,325 implant-retained prostheses were provided by SUS. It is possible to observe that some states played a massive role on the provision of dental implants and implant-retained prostheses (Parana state: 58.4% and 55.9% and Paraiba state: 21.1% and 25.2% of the total amount of dental implants and implant-retained prostheses, respectively) while some states did not provide a single implant-retained prosthesis. Also, inland cities were mostly responsible for the number of procedures compared to the state capitals. Conclusion:Although dental implant therapy is available in SUS across the country, the number of treatments provided in the last decade is still very limited and is also mainly concentrated in the southeastern region of Brazil

Abstract Background Public health in Brazil has undergone major changes in recent decades. Objective To describe the overview of dental production performed by the Brazilian Unified Health System from 1999 to 2017 in Brazil and its macroregions. Method Data were obtained from the Outpatient Information System (SIA/SUS) and from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Procedures rates (per 100,000 inhabitants per year) were established in each macroregion: restorative, prosthetic, collective, endodontic, exodontia, periodontic and preventive procedures. Statistical analysis of the time series was performed using a regression linear model. Results Prosthetic and periodontal procedures were the only ones with a positive linear trend in all Brazilian macroregions (p<0.001). Endodontics did not show a positive trend in Brazil (p=0.173). Restorations showed a growth in the North (p=0.003) and Center-west (p<0.001) macroregions. Exodontia presented a tendency to increase in the North macroregion (p=0.046), while the Midwest presented a decrease of it (p=0.049). Preventive (p=0.042) and collective (p=0.017) procedures showed a decrease in their production during the period. Conclusion Oral health showed great growth within the single health system in the 19 years evaluated. Periodontal procedures and dental prostheses were those with the highest growth trends.

RESUMO

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of the desire of university students for esthetic treatment and tooth bleaching, and associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in 2016 with first-semester university students in Pelotas. Data was collected via a self-administered questionnaire including demographic, socioeconomic and psychosocial characteristics. Oral Impact on Daily Performance (OIDP) was assessed and Poisson regression models were used to evaluate the association between the following outcomes: prevalence of desire for esthetic treatment and the tooth bleaching, and exposure variables. A p-value of ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Results: A total of 2,058 students participated in the study. Refusals represented a mere 1.4% of the total sample. Of the individuals interviewed, 16.1% underwent tooth bleaching and 74.4% reported a desire for esthetic dental treatment. Models showed students with higher family income and with the intention to use private dental services had 65% and 47% higher prevalence of tooth bleaching, respectively. Individuals satisfied with dental color and appearance exhibited a higher prevalence of tooth bleaching, as did those who smoked. On the other hand, students satisfied with dental color (PR= 0.77, 95% CI: 0.73-0.80) and with their dental appearance (PR= 0.82, 95% CI 0.78-0.87) demonstrated less desire to undergo esthetic dental treatment. Moreover, individuals who suffered some impact in OIDP reported a greater desire for esthetic treatment (PR= 1.07, 95% CI: 1.02-1.13). Conclusion: General and psychosocial characteristics were associated with the desire for esthetic treatment and tooth bleaching in university students
